CarrierOK Alternatives for Freight Brokers: Free FMCSA Carrier Lookups vs. CarrierOK Monitoring (Updated October 2026)

Short answer (opinion): CarrierOK is a paid carrier-intelligence platform. Plans run from $149/mo (Pro, 1 user) to $499/mo (Business, 10 users), and every plan includes monitoring, insurance history, all 7 BASIC percentiles, a computed ISS score and 50+ risk signals. If you only need to check a carrier's public FMCSA record now and then, free tools cover that: FMCSA SAFER (official), CarrierCheck and DOT Carrier Data. For daily vetting with same-day alerts, CarrierOK is the better fit.

At a glance (as of Oct 13, 2026):

  • CarrierCheck: free lookups with insurance and bulk search : Free, no sign-up
  • DOT Carrier Data (ours): fact summary plus a free, no-key JSON API : Free

Do you need CarrierOK alternatives, or a free companion?

CarrierOK is built for desks that verify carriers continuously. Its own pricing page frames the value as time saved and carriers caught losing insurance or authority after a check. If that's your workflow, a free lookup isn't a substitute. CarrierOK alternatives that are free make sense in two cases: 1. Low volume: you check a handful of carriers a month and $149/mo is hard to justify. 2. Companion use: you already pay for vetting software but want a quick free lookup or a JSON feed for an internal script.

What you give up by going free

Be clear-eyed about it. Compared with CarrierOK's pricing page, the free options don't offer:

  • Monitoring: no same-day alerts when a carrier's authority, insurance or risk signals change.
  • Insurance history at the policy level (SAFER links to FMCSA's L&I filings; CarrierCheck shows coverage on file).
  • Full BASIC percentiles and a computed ISS score, which CarrierOK describes as "scoring FMCSA does not publish."
  • Fraud signals, seats and exports for a team.

1. FMCSA SAFER (official)

Best for: the authoritative check before every booking. Price: free; one carrier at a time (FMCSA SAFER).

  • Pros: official; 24-month inspection and crash data with out-of-service rates; safety rating; cargo and operation classification.
  • Cons: no API, no monitoring, no bulk search.
  • Choose it always, as the final step.

2. CarrierCheck

Best for: small brokerages that want insurance and authority age on one free page. Price: free, no sign-up (carrierchk.com, checked Oct 13, 2026).

  • Pros (per its site): BI&PD and cargo insurance with pending cancellations; authority age with color coding; Bulk Search; search by phone or email as well as USDOT, MC and name.
  • Cons: a third-party copy of FMCSA data synced daily, not real time. In our USDOT 53467 test its authority age (3 months) and inspection count (200) didn't match SAFER's history, so confirm on SAFER. We didn't test bulk search.
  • Choose it if you want more than SAFER shows but can't justify a subscription.

3. DOT Carrier Data (ours)

Best for: developers, AI agents and analysts who need public FMCSA carrier facts as JSON, plus a quick human-readable summary. Price: free (dotcarrierdata.com, checked Oct 13, 2026).

  • Pros: free JSON API with no key (/api/v1/carrier/{dot}, /docket/{mc}, /search?q=); operating authority and out-of-service data from FMCSA's QCMobile API; shows "Unknown (verify on SAFER)" instead of guessing when FMCSA returns no out-of-service data; lists the FMCSA sources behind each record.
  • Cons (what it does not do): no monitoring, insurance, inspection history, risk scores, seats or exports. API responses can be cached for up to 1 hour and the underlying FMCSA data for up to 24 hours.
  • Choose it if you're wiring carrier lookups into a spreadsheet, TMS script or agent and will confirm on SAFER.

How we compared

On Oct 13, 2026 we read CarrierOK's public pricing page and FAQ, CarrierCheck's public home page, and FMCSA's SAFER Snapshot, and saved copies (see our facts log). We didn't start a CarrierOK trial (it requires a card) or create any accounts, so CarrierOK and CarrierCheck features are described as each states them. We tested DOT Carrier Data and CarrierCheck live against SAFER for Werner Enterprises (USDOT 53467) on Oct 13, 2026: all three showed the carrier active with operating authority. DOT Carrier Data showed out-of-service as "Unknown (verify on SAFER)"; SAFER listed no out-of-service date.

When CarrierOK is the better choice

  • You book loads daily and need to know the same day if a carrier's authority or insurance changes.
  • You need policy-level insurance history, full BASIC percentiles or fraud signals that FMCSA's public pages don't show.
  • You have a team that needs seats, exports, a Chrome extension or an enterprise API.

FAQ

How much does CarrierOK cost? As of Oct 13, 2026: Pro $149/mo (1 user, 100 monitored carriers), Team $349/mo (5 users, 750), Business $499/mo (10 users, 2,000), and Enterprise at custom pricing. Its API is billed separately on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Does CarrierOK have a free trial? Yes. CarrierOK offers a 14-day free trial on the Pro plan. Its FAQ says a credit card is required to start, and plans are month-to-month with no contract.

Is there a free alternative to CarrierOK? For one-off checks, yes: FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot is free and official, CarrierCheck is a free lookup with insurance details, and DOT Carrier Data offers a free summary and JSON API. None offers CarrierOK-style monitoring or risk scoring.

Can a free tool monitor carriers for changes? Not the ones covered here. SAFER, CarrierCheck and DOT Carrier Data show the record when you look it up. Same-day change alerts are a paid feature on platforms like CarrierOK.

Should I still check SAFER if I use CarrierOK or another tool? Yes. SAFER is FMCSA's official public record. Third-party tools, paid or free, repackage FMCSA data, so confirming a carrier on SAFER before tendering a load is a sensible last step.
