FMCSA SAFER Alternatives: Free USDOT & MC Number Carrier Lookup Tools Compared (Updated October 2026)
Short answer: FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot is the official, free way to look up a motor carrier by USDOT number, MC/MX number or company name, one carrier at a time (FMCSA SAFER). Free alternatives such as CarrierCheck and DOT Carrier Data repackage public FMCSA data into different views, bulk search or a JSON API. Whichever you use, confirm a carrier on SAFER before you book a load.

SAFER and Motus: what changed in 2026
FMCSA's new registration system, Motus, handles USDOT registration and operating-authority applications: applying, biennial updates, voluntary suspension (FMCSA, "About FMCSA Registration Changes"). SAFER is still the public lookup (we used it on Oct 13, 2026). What matters for carrier lookups:
- Existing USDOT and docket numbers don't change. MC/MX/FF prefixes remain (FMCSA).
- Newly issued USDOT and docket numbers are randomized to deter fraud, so a "low number means an old carrier" rule of thumb no longer holds for new registrants (FMCSA).
- Each newly granted authority gets its own docket number with its own history (FMCSA).
- New USDOT numbers show suffixes in the company's Motus account; FMCSA says they're not a vehicle-marking requirement. Source: FMCSA, registration changes, read Oct 13, 2026.
Why people look for SAFER alternatives
SAFER is authoritative, and nothing here replaces it. People look elsewhere for practical reasons:
- One carrier at a time. FMCSA describes the Snapshot as an ad-hoc query, one carrier at a time.
- No API. Developers and AI agents can't pull Snapshot data as structured JSON.
- Several places to check. Authority and insurance details sit on separate FMCSA pages (L&I), and safety percentiles sit on another system (SMS).
1. FMCSA SAFER Company Snapshot (official)
Best for: any booking or compliance decision. Price: free (FMCSA SAFER).
- Shows (sample USDOT 53467, Oct 13, 2026): entity type, USDOT status, out-of-service date, MCS-150 date and mileage, operating-authority status, MC number, company details, power units and drivers, operation classification, cargo carried, 24-month US inspection and out-of-service rates, crashes, Canada data and safety rating.
- Limits: one carrier at a time; HTML only.
- Use it every time before tendering a load. We link to it from every carrier page.
2. CarrierCheck
Best for: brokers who want insurance details and bulk lookups in one free view. Price: free, no account or sign-up, per carrierchk.com (checked Oct 13, 2026).
- Per its site: search by USDOT, MC, name, phone or email; authority status; BI&PD and cargo insurance with pending cancellations; safety rating; fleet and driver counts; authority age; a Bulk Search tool; data synced daily from FMCSA.
- Limits: third-party, so it's only as current as its last sync (it says typically under 24 hours). In our test for USDOT 53467 it showed an authority age of 3 months (since 6/15/2026) and 200 inspections, while SAFER showed the carrier added in 1974 and 11,756 US inspections in 24 months, so check SAFER for history. We didn't test bulk search.
- Choose it if you want insurance and authority age on one free page.
3. DOT Carrier Data (ours)
Best for: a one-page fact summary, and developers or AI agents who need carrier data as JSON. Price: free (dotcarrierdata.com, checked Oct 13, 2026).
- What it shows: USDOT status; operating authority (common, contract, broker) from FMCSA's QCMobile API; out-of-service order when FMCSA returns one, otherwise "Unknown (verify on SAFER)"; safety rating and date; MCS-150 freshness; power units, drivers, hazmat flag and address; the FMCSA sources used, with a timestamp.
- API:
/api/v1/carrier/{dot},/api/v1/docket/{mc},/api/v1/search?q=(up to 25 results); no key; CORS enabled; 60 requests a minute per IP. API responses are cached for up to 1 hour and the underlying FMCSA data for up to 24 hours; the timestamp in each response is when we assembled it, not when FMCSA last updated the record. - What it does not do: inspection and crash history, insurance, BASIC percentiles that FMCSA doesn't publish, monitoring or alerts. It's independent and not affiliated with FMCSA.
- Choose it if you want carrier facts in a script, spreadsheet or agent workflow, then confirm on SAFER.
How we compared
On Oct 13, 2026 (about 10:20 p.m. ET) we looked up the same carrier, Werner Enterprises (USDOT 53467), on all three. SAFER showed USDOT status Active, authorized for property and broker operations, and no out-of-service date. DOT Carrier Data showed Active, operating authority Common, Contract, Broker, and out-of-service "Unknown (verify on SAFER)", on both the cached and an uncached API response. CarrierCheck showed Active, Carrier and Broker authority, a Satisfactory rating and $4,000,000 BI&PD insurance. We didn't create accounts anywhere. Copies of every page are in our facts log, and screenshots of our result and SAFER's are below.

When SAFER is still the better choice
Always for the final check before booking, and whenever you need inspection and crash history, out-of-service percentages, cargo carried, Canada data, or the official licensing and insurance record.
FAQ
Is FMCSA SAFER free? Yes. FMCSA says the Company Snapshot is available as an ad-hoc query, one carrier at a time, free of charge. You can search by USDOT number, MC/MX number or company name at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.
Did Motus replace SAFER? No. Motus is FMCSA's new system for registering and managing USDOT numbers and operating authority. SAFER is still the public company lookup. Existing USDOT and docket numbers didn't change; new ones are randomized (FMCSA, checked Oct 13, 2026).
Is there a free SAFER API? The SAFER Snapshot has no public API. FMCSA offers the QCMobile API, which requires a WebKey from FMCSA's developer site, and publishes the Company Census file on data.transportation.gov. DOT Carrier Data provides a free JSON API built on both, with no key needed.
Why does a tool show "Unknown" for out-of-service? On DOT Carrier Data, "Unknown" means FMCSA's check didn't return out-of-service data for that carrier. We don't treat missing data as "no order," so you'll see "Unknown" for many carriers that have no order, including Werner (USDOT 53467), whose SAFER snapshot lists no out-of-service date. Check the date on SAFER.
Are third-party carrier lookup sites official? No. CarrierCheck and DOT Carrier Data are independent sites that republish public FMCSA data. They can be more convenient, but only SAFER and FMCSA's own systems are official. Verify on SAFER before booking.
